Autos On The Go recently coordinated an ultra-VIP transport of a Mercedes-AMG G 63 4×4² from Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, to Greenwich, Connecticut. With a value exceeding $300,000 and dimensions unlike a conventional G-Class, this was one of those moves where the vehicle itself dictated the equipment.
The G 63 4×4 Squared combines substantial weight with exceptional height, width, ground clearance and an unusual stance created in part by its portal-axle design. Those characteristics can limit the types of transport equipment suitable for the vehicle.
For this shipment, we arranged a dedicated single-car hauler, giving the G-Wagon its own truck for the trip from Florida’s Emerald Coast to Connecticut.
Why a G 63 4×4 Squared Isn’t a Typical SUV Transport
Pickup took place in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, along the Emerald Coast, with delivery approximately 1,200 miles north in Greenwich, Connecticut. The vehicle itself made this anything but a routine SUV shipment: the G 63 4×4 Squared weighs more than 6,000 pounds, stands nearly 7½ feet tall, and carries a value exceeding $300,000.
For an ultra-high-value vehicle like this, our job as the broker goes beyond finding a truck with an open spot.
We needed a carrier with equipment suitable for the G-Wagon’s dimensions and weight, a driver comfortable handling an unusual specialty vehicle, and the ability to provide the level of communication expected on a move of this caliber.

Rather than loading the G 63 onto a large multi-car transporter, this shipment was handled on a single-car hauler dedicated to the vehicle.

The Transport Challenges of a G 63 4×4 Squared
The 4×4 Squared may be based on the G-Class, but from a transportation standpoint, its proportions put it in a very different category.
Depending on model year and configuration, the AMG G 63 4×4² weighs more than 6,000 pounds and stands roughly 7½ feet tall. Its extreme ground clearance and portal axles are central to what makes the 4×4 Squared such an unusual vehicle — and also why transport equipment needs to be selected carefully. Height and Trailer Clearance
Vehicle height is one of the first considerations.
At roughly 7½ feet tall, a G 63 4×4 Squared can’t simply be treated like another Mercedes SUV. Overall loaded height, trailer configuration and available clearance all have to be considered before a carrier is dispatched.
This becomes particularly important when evaluating enclosed equipment, where interior height and door clearance can eliminate trailers that would otherwise be perfectly suitable for a conventional G-Wagon.
More Than 6,000 Pounds
Weight is another factor.
A G 63 4×4 Squared tips the scales at well over three tons. The carrier’s equipment, trailer capacity and overall load configuration therefore matter considerably more than they would for a typical passenger vehicle.
It’s one reason we verify the exact vehicle being transported rather than relying solely on the words “Mercedes G-Wagon” when selecting a carrier.
Ramp and Loading Angles Matter
The 4×4 Squared has enormous ground clearance and aggressive approach and departure angles, but that doesn’t mean loading equipment should be an afterthought.
Ramp length, trailer deck height, loading geometry and securement all need to make sense for the specific vehicle and transporter.
With rare and unusually proportioned vehicles, we want the carrier selected around the vehicle — not the vehicle forced onto whatever equipment happens to be available.
Why We Used a Dedicated Single-Car Hauler
There isn’t one correct transport configuration for every G-Wagon 4×4 Squared.
For this particular Santa Rosa Beach-to-Greenwich move, a dedicated single-car hauler was the right fit.
A single-car setup meant the transport was centered around one vehicle rather than a trailer carrying multiple customer vehicles with different pickup and delivery points.
For an ultra-VIP shipment, that can offer several advantages: fewer loading events around the vehicle, a more direct transport schedule, and a carrier whose attention is focused on a single piece of cargo.
And when that cargo is a $300,000+ G 63 4×4 Squared, those details are critical.
Open or Enclosed Transport for a G-Wagon 4×4 Squared?
